Curatorial Statement

Power Play; A Girl Behind A Gun is a sensual, cheeky reclamation of power, using figuration to toy with power dynamics, and the expectations placed upon the feminine form. Theresa Hopkins, Siobhan Paterson, and Samantha Stott, work collectively to subvert the objectification of the male gaze, resituating themselves as the ones in control within a patriarchal society. Often the feminine form is objectified by men through figuration communicating an unspoken authority over the feminine. The muse, a term often used towards women, attempts to reduce the female form to a consumable object of male desire. Power Play; A Girl Behind A Gun, radically refuses this narrative and rightfully places female artists as the ones in power of their narratives around desire, and eroticism.
